SFTW Wrapped 2024

177: Tech Innovation trends for AgriFood Leaders

SFTW Wrapped 2024

Right around and after Thanksgiving here in the US, many of us have eaten more than we should, and/or impulse bought more stuff than we should have.

Spotify’s genius is to drop Spotify Wrapped right around that time, to help us feel good about the music we listened to, and then share the goodness with our friends and family.

Not that anyone cares, but for the n’th year in a row, my top song on Spotify was “Lose Yourself” by Eminem from 8 Mile.

For this week’s edition, I am running a group SFTW Wrapped version and am highlighting 1 editions which sparked the most amount of constructive discussions.

2024 has been an interesting year of experimentation for SFTW.

As you will see through these 10 editions, I have written about robotics and automation, GenAI, regenerative agriculture, food and ag value chains, role of (or lack there off) technology giants in agriculture, platforms, and much more. The through line for them has been the central role of technology in evolving business models, bringing better products for customers, and value creation and capture for organizations.

Please send me a note if you would like me to go deeper in certain areas for 2025. Having said that, the role of technology in food and agriculture continues to be a fascinating topic, and cannot be more thankful to you for being part of this journey.

SFTW Convo: Bringing Iron & Tech together with Sona Raziabeegum
The future of agriculture equipment is software enabled hardware, which is not easy to do for every organization. Sona from CNH highlights some of the challenges, and we also discuss her views on automation, innovation, business models, and culture.
Bayer & Microsoft bolster the last mile through E.L.Y.
Bayer Crop Science has released small language models, built in partnership with Microsoft. BCS spent a significant amount of time to make sure these language models are reliable, trustworthy, and provide efficiencies and confidence to their front-line staff.
SFTW Interview: AI for legacy companies with Feroz Sheikh
Feroz is CIO of the Syngenta Group. This convo focused on the role of AI in a legacy company like Syngenta, what is needed to do AI projects (Feroz's answer will surprise you), how will farming change due to new capabilities like AI which lead to automation, and autonomy. This was the most popular post for 2024!
SFTW Interview: Navigating the messy middle
Jake is one of the OGs of AgTech! Jake and I had a fascinating conversation about the un-sexy problems in agriculture, the messy middle between the farm and the downstream off-take, and how basic technology is needed. We also talk about Jake's idea of a super app for agriculture.
Scaling Innovation: Regenerative Agriculture
Scaling Innovation series looks into how to scale innovation within food and agriculture. Regenerative agriculture has been a hot topic for many years, but it has struggled to scale. This edition goes into some of the headwinds.
166. The Retreat of Tech Giants (from AgTech)
Over the last 10 years, tech giants like Microsoft, Google, and Amazon have put in more than their toes in the treacherous AgTech waters. But post CoViD, there has been a definite pullback from the tech giants. This post goes into the reasons why.
159. FieldView's Number of Nights metric
Many of AgTech products struggle with not having a unifying north-star metric they can chase to provide valuable products to their customers. For example, AirBnB had number of nights. I take the example of products like Climate FieldView and talk about what their "number of nights" metric could be and how it could help them.
158. Beware of the "platform"
When everything being pushed to you is a "platform" you should watch out for it. This post is an honest reflection of my own personal experience with the platform concept, and goes into some of the business, and psychological reasons of some of the outcomes we have seen over the years.
156. The Fusion Frontier
The future of industrial products will bring hardware, and software together, also known as fusion strategy. This edition explores what is at the frontier of the fusion strategy, and what are the considerations for your business.
